Why Join

The Animal Behavior Society was founded in 1964 to promote the study of animal behaviour in the broadest sense, including studies using descriptive and experimental methods under natural and controlled conditions. Current members' research activities span the invertebrates and vertebrates, both in the field and in the laboratory, and include experimental psychology, behavioural ecology, neuroscience, zoology, biology, applied ethology, and human ethology as well as many other specialized areas.

Membership

Membership is open to persons engaged in the scientific study of animal behaviour, or interested in advancing such study, primarily in North and South America. We also have a sister organization - the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) for those in the UK and Europe.

WHY JOIN?

Some of the advantages of membership are:

  • Subscription to ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR, an international monthly publication and a leading journal in the field with over 3000 pages a year. ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR contains research articles, commentaries and essays, forum postings, reviews and book reviews.
  • A quarterly Newsletter with information about
    • jobs, fellowships, and research grants in animal behavior,
    • meetings of ABS and other societies with related interests, and the biennial International Ethological Conference.
  • access to a set of laboratory exercises for teachers of animal behavior.
  • A book list of interest to Animal Behavior Society members.
  • A regularly updated film list of topics of interest to members of the Animal Behavior Society. (hard copy on request)
  • A brochure describing careers for individuals interested in animal behavior and a guide to programs in Animal Behavior are some of the resources offered by the Education Committee.
  • The opportunity to attend annual and regional meetings of the Animal Behavior Society at reduced rates, and present papers at these meetings.
  • access to grants and awards that help improve research, encourage travel and acknowledge contributions to the society and the field of animal behavior.
